After having the amazing opportunity to take part in a Little Miss Geek workshop – in which I won a laptop (O.M.G) – my creative juices were going crazy and I was ready to start getting all techy, and it seemed the IT world was ready for me too because later that day we began a new project in our ICT lessons, which was to create an app that solved a problem. Little did we know that with all that hard work and determination (not to mention inspiration from Little Miss Geek and the best ICT teacher in the world Mr. Talbert) we would make it to the finals of the “Apps For Good” competition with our app (and yep this project was a competition too between all the schools in the UK that did it).
Oh yeah, you’re probably wondering what our app does? Well it is to encourage people to recycle by scanning your products’ packaging on your phone and it tells you in detail whether it is recyclable or not. Not only does it do that, but you can type in your location and it tells you where your nearest recycling bin or station is (Cool huh?!). However that’s not it, you get ‘rewards’ for doing this (yes rewards!) because for everything you recycle you get points and when you have collected enough points you can get vouchers for shops or games for your smartphone and much much more….
Unfortunately we didn’t win but it was a great experience. We had to do a presentation to some (very scary) judges, which was nerve racking but really built my confidence. So it wasn’t a complete waste of time at all. And it definitely wasn’t the end of my IT journey because soon after that we made the TREACHEROUS journey (Just kidding it was a lovely train journey actually) to EA games and Media Molecule. Well what can I say, “They have the coolest studio’s EVER” it blew my mind they sit on real car tires in EA and have an air hockey table at Media Molecule! Turns out they don’t actually just sit and play games all day… well definitely not all day, but most (here they have to test them out of course).
However on a serious note there was a real, massive lack of girls working at the studios, which makes me so angry so come on girls we need to change this because if working at those amazing studios means helping change stereotypes I’M IN!!!!
Now the question is are you????
Also with regards to the app well we are on our way, we have a meeting with a potential backer on this coming Tuesday so wish us luck!!!!
Lots of love
